AWIS Presents: Debra Bowes,
The President of Women in Biology
Thursday, April 14th, 7-8pm : Tate102

Thursday night we're hosting a speaker from 7:00-8:30 in 102 in the Tate Student Center. AWIS has invited Debra Bowes, the president of Women in Bio down from Washington to give a talk on balancing her career goals and personal life, and what the progress of a career in science can become. Ms. Bowes has extensive experience of working in the field and industry in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology and can speak volumes about how to approach finding a job with a degree in the sciences--especially with regard to transitioning into managerial positions. Her bio is posted below:


Debra K. Bowes, M.T.
Principal, Chevy Chase BioPartners, LLC

With 30 years of Biotech and Pharma experience, Debra started her own consulting firm in 2006, Chevy Chase BioPartners, specializing in Strategic Planning and Licensing for start-up Life Science companies. 

Prior to consulting she was the Head of New Product Planning for MedImmune where she built a department responsible for supporting the commercial and business planning aspects of MedImmune’s R&D pipeline. Prior to MedImmune Debra held the position of Senior Director, Corporate Development for Amylin Pharmaceuticals.

Previously, she spent several years at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in Licensing and New Product Planning focusing on oncology. From 1995 to 1998, she served as Worldwide Market Manager for Centocor, where she was responsible for managing and expanding oncology licensing agreements with European and Japanese partners. Debra started her pharmaceutical career with Hybritech, Inc where she held various positions in sales, marketing, market research and licensing.

Debra is the current President and Chairman of the Board for Women in BIO for 2011. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Cincinnati and a Medical Technologist (M.T.) certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

MCG/UGA Panel
Wednesday, March 9th, 7pm : Moore 002*

We are excited to announce that we will be hosting the new MCG/UGA Medical Students this Wednesday, March 9th at 7 pm in Rm 002 of Moore College. The meeting should be a one of a kind opportunity to get some real insight into how it is like to be a medical student and what they are doing at the new Medical school. As well as a great opportunity to get candid, one-on-one advice on getting into medical school and making contacts with the medical students from early on. We hope to see you there!

Day with the Dogs
Saturday, February 26, from 11-12:30

We will spend part of Saturday morning walking, bathing and playing with the dogs (and puppies!) at the local animal control shelter! It should be a lot of fun and is a great way to give back to the community. Please RSVP your attendance, and the number of friends you plan to bring, as soon as possible so you can secure your spot. This is the semester's last Pi in the Sky. We will be going to Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary school to perform a few awesome experiments with the children. We will meet around 3:30 in the O-house parking lot (at the benches close to the dining hall). We will leave campus at exactly 3:45pm and return by 5:15pm.

Dr. Colley Lecture

Come Meet One of UGA's Finest Researchers

-Dr. Colley recently received $18.7 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to further his research on schistosomiasis in people. Schistomsomiasis affects more than 200 million people worldwide.
- Dr. Colley received the Brazilian Presidential Medal for Scientific Merit, which is Brazil's country's highest scholarly honor in 2005.
- Professor Colley serves as the Head for the Center for Tropical and Emerging Diseases at UGA 
- His research has led him to extensive travel in Brazil and Kisumu, Kenya as well as to St. Lucia and Egypt.

Come to this great event to learn more about Dr. Colley's fantastic journey as a researcher!

 

Study Abroad Panel for STEM Majors

The panel will give opportunity to students who belong to science, technology, engineering and math majors to explore options and ask questions about studying or volunteering abroad. Panelists will talk about several programs open to UGA students. There also will be a Q & A portion with students who have had experience with the program in the past. This event is open to everyone; please do attend to find out more information.

Girl Scouts Event
Saturday, March 20th, 8:30am

The first girl scout even is this Saturday, March 20th! Get excited! If you would like to volunteer please arrive at 8:30am to the Tate Reception Hall. There is parking in the new Tate deck. The Tate reception hall is located on the lower level of the original "old" Tate.

You do not need to bring any supplies. Just bring yourself and a good attitude!

This week the Association for Women in Science will be holding its second informational meeting of the semester THIS WEDNESDAY AT 7PM IN THE MILLER LEARNING CENTER ROOM 207. Come out to hear about upcoming local and national programs, as well as a brief tutorial on how to best utilize your AWIS membership. This will include everything from networking and job hunting workshops, to AWIS internship opportunities and awards. Dr. Mary Lynch received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and is, currently, both a professor of ophthalmology at the Emory School of Medicine and Chief of Ophthalmology at the VA Medical Center in Decatur. While excelling in her career, Dr. Lynch has also maintained balance in her personal life as a wife and mother of three. She wants to share her experiences with the members of AWIS for all those wondering how one person can manage it all. This event is open to everyone!

Dr. Mary Bedell
“Life After College: Graduate School and Beyond”

Are you interested in learning more about jobs in the sciences, what to expect after college, and graduate school? Come hear Dr. Mary Bedell's speak about her own life experiences, jobs in the field, and answer questions during a Q&A session at the end.  The lecture will be held on Wednesday, November 19th at 6:00 pm in SLC Room 275.

After completing her undergraduate degree, Dr. Bedell worked in a lab as a research technician. After some time, she went back to school and completed her Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology at the University of Chicago and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute - Frederick Cancer Research and Development Center. Her postdoctoral research was focused on Kit Ligand, an intracellular signaling factor. She continued this research at UGA for a number of years before deciding to focus on teaching.

 

'A Dean's Perspective on M.D., Ph.D., and M.D./Ph.D. Programs'

Dr. Joel Oppenheim is the Senior Associate Dean for Biomedical Sciences, Professor of Microbiology, and Director of the Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at New York University.  He is in charge of admissions to NYU for the M.D./Ph.D. and Ph.D. programs and sits on the MD admissions committee.  He is very knowledgeable about these degrees and is a great resource for anyone who is thinking about pursuing any of them.  He will also have great tips about the application process in general. Women and men are all welcome

We hope that everyone's semester is off to a great start, and thanks to anyone who came out to our booth at the Activities Fair. Now that we are all settled in with classes, the Association of Women in Sciences (AWIS) at UGA would like to invite you all to come to the first program of the semester.  This will be a small discussion session held on Wednesday, the 17th of September at 7:00 p.m in the SLC room 253.  It will be a great opportunity for everyone to meet fellow science majors and discusses experiences, goals, classes, good professors, and various other opportunities on campus.

February 14, 2006: Hilsman Middle Pi in the Sky

AWIS at UGA held the Pi in the Sky afterschool science program at Hilsman Middle School on February 14th. In celebration of Valentine's Day, we did an experiment involving the different dyes that are in the hard sugar coat of candies such as Skittles, Smarties, and M&Ms.

February 2, 2006: Dr. Harriet Robinson

AWIS at UGA was proud to welcome Dr. Harriet Robinson from Emory University to discuss her exciting research on HIV and AIDS and her involvement in the Vaccine Center at Emory. Read more about her here! We met in the SLC in Room 275 for her exciting talk, "Developing Successful AIDS Vaccines: Dr. Harriet Robinson's Experiences at the Cutting Edge."

December 1, 2005: Dr. Leslie Dauphin

On Thursday, December 1st, AWIS at UGA was proud to present Dr. Leslie Ann Dauphin, Ph.D., a Microbiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She works in the Bioterrorism Rapid Response and Advance Technology Laboratory at the CDC. Dr. Dauphin is not only an inspirational scientist but a devoted wife and mother. She is also a community activist and a mentor in the field of science. Most recently, Dr. Dauphin published a book titled "The Germ Handbook." This was a great opportunity to learn how successful female scientists balance all aspects of their life. We met at the SLC in Room 153 at 5:30 PM to hear Dr. Dauphin's talk, "Women Scientists: Maintaining a Balance."

November 16, 2005: Drs. Peggy Brickman and Jane Ellis

On Wednesday, November 16th at 5:30 PM, AWIS at UGA presented a discussion between Dr. Jane Ellis, Professor of Biology at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, and Dr. Peggy Brickman, Biological Sciences Professor at UGA. They discussed the advantages and disadvantages of teaching science at the Ph.D. level in either liberal arts colleges or big public universities.

October 20, 2005: AWIS Dessert and Coffee Hour

What's dashing women's dreams? AWIS at UGA met on Thursday, October 20th at 7:30 PM in the North Tower of the SLC to discuss the article "Do Women Lack Ambition" by Anna Fels, a psychiatrist in the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, while enjoying desserts and coffee with fellow AWIS members.

September 14, 2005: Fall Activities Fair

AWIS hosted a table at UGA's Fall Student Activities Fair on September 14, 2005 between 10:30 AM and 4 PM, outside in the Tate Plaza.

March 24, 2005: Dr. Stephanie Sherman

AWIS at UGA was proud to present Dr. Stephanie Sherman, the Director of Emory University's Genetics and Molecular Biology Graduate program. She discussed her exciting research in Fragile X Syndrome and Human Genetics and her experiences as a female research scientist.

February 17, 2005: Dr. Patricia Cameron

AWIS at UGA had the privilege to host Dr. Patricia Cameron from Medical College of Georgia. She discussed the STAR Program at MCG, a wonderful summer research program for undergraduates.

January 26, 2005: Spring Activities Fair

November 10, 2004: Dr. Deborah Delmer

Dr. Deborah Delmer, the Director of Food Security for the Rockefeller Foundation and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, paid a special visit to UGA to give her talk "A Woman's Journey in Science: From Academia in the US to Development of Agriculture in Africa" to undergraduates.

April 4, 2004: Pi in the Sky

AWIS at UGA's favorite community outreach event is an afterschool program called Pi in the Sky which is given in conjunction with the local chapter of the Girl Scouts of America. Pi in the Sky unites UGA students with local middle school students in an effort to show them how interesting and fun science can be.
